Choosing between the ABB CM592-DP and CM592-DP-XC can appear difficult because the two modules provide almost identical PROFIBUS communication functions. The essential difference is not network speed or processing capacity. It is the type of operating environment for which each version is designed.
Both products are ABB AC500 communication modules that allow a compatible PLC to operate as a PROFIBUS DP master. They support transmission rates of up to 12 Mbit/s and communication with as many as 125 DPV0 or DPV1 slaves. The standard CM592-DP is intended for normal industrial control environments, while CM592-DP-XC belongs to the AC500-XC range for installations exposed to more demanding environmental conditions.
For most buyers, the correct selection depends on three questions: where the module will be installed, what environmental conditions it will face and whether the rest of the PLC system uses standard or XC components.

The CM592 series provides the communication interface between an ABB AC500 controller and a PROFIBUS DP network. When configured as the master, the module manages cyclic data exchange with distributed I/O stations, drives and other compatible PROFIBUS devices.
The module uses a potential-free EIA RS-485 interface with a female 9-pin D-sub connection. It supports transmission rates from 9.6 kbit/s to 12 Mbit/s, allowing the network speed to be selected according to cable length, device capability and system requirements.
Both CM592 variants offer the same essential PROFIBUS function. This means that the XC model should not be viewed as a faster or more powerful communication module. Its additional value comes from its suitability for the environmental conditions defined for ABB AC500-XC systems.
The standard ABB CM592-DP PROFIBUS DP master module is generally the correct choice when the PLC is installed in a protected indoor cabinet. Common applications include production machinery, packaging equipment, assembly lines, material-handling systems and process control panels located in controlled industrial environments.
ABB specifies standard AC500 system operation from 0°C to +60°C with horizontal mounting. Vertical mounting is permitted from 0°C to +40°C under the applicable system conditions. Standard AC500 environmental data also specify a maximum relative humidity of 95% without condensation.
If the electrical cabinet maintains stable temperature and humidity and is not exposed to salt mist or corrosive gases, CM592-DP normally provides the required PROFIBUS communication capability. Selecting the standard version can also simplify maintenance when the existing controller, terminal base and I/O modules are all standard AC500 products.
The ABB CM592-DP-XC is intended for use as part of an AC500-XC system. It should be considered when operating conditions extend beyond the standard AC500 environmental limits.
ABB specifies an AC500-XC operating temperature range from −40°C to +70°C, subject to stated mounting and derating requirements. The XC system data also address operation with condensation, high altitude, specified corrosive gases and salt-mist exposure.
These characteristics can make CM592-DP-XC suitable for control systems installed in unheated locations, exposed industrial sites or facilities where temperature and atmospheric conditions cannot be maintained within standard limits. The final selection should always be based on documented site conditions rather than the assumption that the XC model is automatically better.
Using one XC communication module does not make the complete PLC system suitable for extreme conditions. The CPU, terminal base, I/O modules, accessories, cabinet and installation method must also be evaluated. Standard components within the same assembly may determine the actual environmental limit of the system.
There is no PROFIBUS speed advantage when choosing CM592-DP-XC. Both versions support transmission rates up to 12 Mbit/s, operate as DPV0 and DPV1 masters and support the same maximum number of slaves.
The XC suffix describes environmental suitability rather than increased communication performance. Replacing CM592-DP with CM592-DP-XC will not correct a network problem caused by unsuitable cabling, missing termination, incorrect grounding, duplicate addresses or an inaccurate project configuration.
When a PROFIBUS network is unstable, the cable type, bus length, connector condition, termination arrangement, baud rate and device configuration should be checked before replacing the communication module.
Their primary PROFIBUS functions are equivalent, but interchangeability should not be assumed from the similar model names. Compatibility must be confirmed against the complete ABB AC500 hardware and software configuration.
Before a replacement, the buyer should verify the CPU model, terminal base, available communication slot, firmware and Automation Builder project. The existing PROFIBUS address, transmission rate, connected slave devices and I/O mapping should also be preserved or correctly recreated.
Replacing a standard CM592-DP with CM592-DP-XC may be possible in a compatible configuration, but the change should still be reviewed by the responsible engineer. Replacing an XC module with the standard version requires additional caution because the installation may depend on the extended environmental capability of the AC500-XC range.
A useful request for quotation should identify whether CM592-DP or CM592-DP-XC is required and include the complete ABB part number. The AC500 CPU model, terminal-base model, quantity, destination country and required delivery date should also be supplied.
For a replacement project, providing the part number of the installed module and a clear label photograph can help prevent model errors. Information about the operating temperature, cabinet environment and required PROFIBUS role is particularly important when the buyer is uncertain whether the standard or XC version is needed.
The quotation should clarify whether it covers only the communication module. Any required PROFIBUS connector, cable, termination component or other accessory should be confirmed separately instead of assumed to be included.
Both are PROFIBUS DP master communication modules with the same core network performance. CM592-DP is designed for standard AC500 environments, while CM592-DP-XC is intended for AC500-XC systems exposed to more demanding environmental conditions.
Yes. Both variants support PROFIBUS DPV0 and DPV1 communication, transmission rates up to 12 Mbit/s and as many as 125 slaves. The XC version adds environmental capability rather than higher network performance.
Their primary PROFIBUS functions are equivalent, but direct replacement should be confirmed against the AC500 CPU, terminal base, firmware and Automation Builder project. Environmental requirements must also be reviewed before replacing an XC module with the standard version.
