FAQ Sheet – Get Answers Before You Order

Q1. What exactly is the 3533E?
A1. It is a Tricon TMR (Triple Modular Redundant) 32-channel digital input module that reads 24 VDC field signals and performs 2oo3 voting right on the card—no additional hardware required.

Q2. How many channels are isolated?
A2. Four groups of eight channels each; group-to-group isolation is 500 VDC and every channel is protected up to 150 VDC continuous over-voltage.

Q3. What is the minimum ON level?
A3. 10 mA sinking, equivalent to ≥15 VDC at the terminal. This allows direct connection to NAMUR sensors, mechanical contacts with series lamps, or solid-state outputs.

Q4. Can I mix NPN and PNP devices on the same module?
A4. Yes. Because the 3533E is a current-sinking (high-side) input, it works with both sourcing (PNP) and sinking (NPN) field devices as long as the ON current ≥10 mA.

Q5. How fast can it scan?
A5. 1 ms channel filter time is default; selectable 0.5, 1, 2, 5 or 10 ms via TriStation. With 1 ms you still get full TMR voting and SOE resolution of 1 ms.

Q6. What cable distance is allowed?
A6. 1 km for shielded 0.75 mm² (AWG 18) at 24 V. For longer runs use heavier gauge or move the marshalling panel closer—the module does not require field power.

Q7. Does 3533E provide line-fault detection (LFD)?
A7. Absolutely. Each channel reports open-circuit, short-to-ground and short-to-24 V within 2 s and exposes the fault bit to TriStation and the SOE buffer.

Q8. Which Tricon chassis slots are valid?
A8. Any I/O slot except RXM remote racks. Key codes 12 & 13 prevent accidental insertion into an analogue slot.

Q9. Power consumption?
A9. 4.8 W typical, 6.2 W max—cooling margin is minimal even in a fully loaded rack.

Q10. Can I hot-swap the module?
A10. Yes. Remove the front plug-in field connector first, extract the module, insert the spare, re-attach the connector—process takes <30 s with no loss of the rest of the rack.

Q11. What about SIL level?
A11. Certified to SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and suitable up to SIL 3 in a voted input architecture.

Q12. Which firmware is required?
A12. TriStation 1131 v4.9 or later; earlier versions will recognise the card but LFD timing will be degraded.

Q13. Spare part number confusion—what to order?
A13. There is only one order code: 3533E (enhanced). The older 3533 non-E is obsolete and lacks LFD.

Q14. Where can I ship it from?

A15. 12 months replacement.

Q17. Can I use 3533E for high-speed pulse catching?
A17. No. For >3 kHz use 3510 or 3511; 3533E is optimised for on/off status and 1 ms-class SOE, not pulse counting.

Q18. What if I need 48 VDC?
A19. Choose 3532E instead—same footprint but rated 48 V with 33 V ON threshold.
